VIDEO: Asher Roth - “Roth Boys” + The GreenHouse Effect Vol 1. Mixtape

Okay okay…I slept.  I slept really hard on this.  I remember the initial buzz about him a while back.  And I initially wrote it off as a cheesy gimmick.  I didn’t want to listen to some corny Caucasian college kid rap.  And I didn’t even care if it came w/ a fresh DJ Drama and Don Cannon co-sign.  Nowadays, I don’t cold-click on anything, which is silly.  That’s something I should be doing on the regular.  Especially since I have a blog now.  I can’t write people off on first look (aka “judge a book by it’s cover,” sorry Levar Burton…you taught me better than that).

So now I feel dumb.  The very first time I watched the video above I smiled.  And I watched it again and giggled.  It reminds me of Long Island.  And then I watched it for the third time and listen to the guy Asher Roth rhyme.  Wow.  He can spit.  He may not have some of the illest lyrics of all-time, but where he falters in that category, he makes up for ten fold in the flow.  He mentions in the song that Jay-Z passed on him leading to Steve Rifkind scooping him up w/ the quickness and signing him to SRC.  See, Hov slept too.

Yes, the Eminem comparisons have already begun.  Their voices do bear an uncanny resemblance.  But trust me (coming from someone who was a HARDCORE pre-Aftermath Eminem head), this guy’s nothing like him whatsoever.

There’s always room for fun, silliness and not taking yourself so seriously in hip-hop.  Hell, there isn’t enough of it.  And if this guy is leading the campaign, I’m ready for the keg party.  Eff all the tough guy nonsense for a while.  The link to his mixtape is below via The Daily Kush.  Highly recommended.

I’m sorry. This kid seems like a nice person and all (I remember meeting him once in his lawyer’s office) but honestly Jay made no mistake passing on this. This looks like an SNL skit and this kid should be auditioning for that instead of trying the diss one of the GOATs.
